Unbreakable Trade-off Between Agricultural Development and Biodiversity Loss: Is There a Magical Role of Artificial Intelligence?

Siew-Pong Cheah, Ai-Lian Tan, Yan-Ling Tan, Thian-Hee Yiew, Chee-Loong Lee

Politická ekonomie 2026, 74(4) Special issue:574-604 | DOI: 10.18267/j.polek.1507

Artificial intelligence (AI) significantly enhances agricultural production by optimizing inputs, minimizing waste and improving management practices. However, the capability of AI to foster sustainable agriculture remains under scrutiny. This study investigates the impact of AI on the relationship between agriculture and biodiversity loss across 132 countries from 2013 to 2021. Employing a negative binomial (NB) regression model, our findings reveal that traditional agricultural practices contribute to an increase in the number of threatened species. Conversely, integrating AI in smart farming practices appears to mitigate biodiversity loss. Additionally,...

Public Environmental Attention and Corporate Greenwashing in China

Qizhi He, Maotao Liu, Xubing Fang, Najaf Iqbal

Politická ekonomie 2026, 74(4) Special issue:605-632 | DOI: 10.18267/j.polek.1519

Corporate greenwashing is increasingly posing a severe threat to effective implementation and evaluation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Apart from regulatory pressure, active participation of the public in environmental governance is essential in this regard. Through a theoretical and empirical lens, this study systematically examines the impact of public environmental attention (PEA) on corporate greenwashing and its underlying mechanism in the Chinese context. The data from A-share firms and the Baidu search index for prefecture-level cities from 2011 to 2020 are gathered and analysed using 2SLS and various robustness tests....

Influence of Green Enterprises on Circular Economy Practices in Developing Countries: A Framework for AI-driven Environmental Policies

Muhammad Usman, Shahbaz Imran, Ahsan Akbar

Politická ekonomie 2026, 74(4) Special issue:633-664 | DOI: 10.18267/j.polek.1513

This study aims to examine the role of green enterprises and their corporate activities in circular economy practices, particularly in the context of developing economies. The modern world is facing enormous environmental concerns, e.g., climate change and pollution, and corporate activities that degrade the environment are primarily responsible for these concerns. Therefore, green entrepreneurship has the potential to reverse the trend and create an eco-friendly environment through circular economy activities. To further strengthen this perspective, the present study proposes a framework for AI-driven environmental policies that can support...

Effectiveness of Environmental Regulation in E7 and G7 Countries: Revisiting the Pollution Halo and Pollution Haven Hypothesis

Ebru Bilgin, Nazmiye Tekdemir, Pelin Varol İyidoğan

Politická ekonomie 2026, 74(4) Special issue:665-694 | DOI: 10.18267/j.polek.1537

This study examines the environmental impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) in E7 and G7 countries from 2005 to 2020 using the ecological footprint as a comprehensive indicator. Employing both linear and nonlinear dynamic panel models, the findings reveal that the environmental effects of FDI depend on the stringency and type of environmental regulation. In E7 countries, FDI tends to worsen environmental degradation under weak regulatory frameworks, providing partial support for the pollution haven hypothesis (PHV). In contrast, in G7 countries, FDI contributes to environmental improvement when market-based and technology-oriented policies surpass...

How Does Energy Insecurity Hurt Green Growth? The Role of Financial Stability

Shiyong Zheng, Jiaying Li, Wen Lu, Muhammad Hafeez, Razaz Waheeb Attar

Politická ekonomie 2026, 74(4) Special issue:695-719 | DOI: 10.18267/j.polek.1512

Climate change is one of the most disturbing issues for people all around the globe. Green growth has become the most viable solution for achieving economic goals without damaging environmental quality. Consequently, our main interest in this analysis is to examine how energy security risk and financial stability affect green growth in top carbon emitter economies. The CS-ARDL model is our selected estimation technique for examining the relationship between energy security risk, financial stability and green growth. The long-run estimates reveal that higher energy security risk lowers green growth. In contrast, financial stability, technology and human...

Energy Poverty and Women in Turkey: Household-level Insights and Policy Implications

Eyup Emre Ulug, Emrah Kocak, Burcu Oralhan, Fatma Unlu

Politická ekonomie 2026, 74(4) Special issue:720-750 | DOI: 10.18267/j.polek.1515

This study examines the impact of women's income, employment, education, health and household characteristics on energy poverty in Turkey. The research utilizes logit and probit regression methods to analyse household data comprehensively, providing a detailed understanding of the factors influencing energy poverty. According to the results, women with any income - particularly those with above-average income - significantly reduce household energy poverty. While the impact of women's employment type on energy poverty is mixed, paid employment strongly reduces it. Higher levels of women's education decrease the likelihood of energy poverty. Women's...

Do Climate Risks Affect Stock Markets? Quantile Connectedness Analysis for Major European Economies

Deniz Sevinç, Veysel Karagöl

Politická ekonomie 2026, 74(4) Special issue:751-781 | DOI: 10.18267/j.polek.1516

This study examines the interconnectedness between climate-related risks and five major stock markets in Europe, which aims to become the first continent with a net-zero emission balance, using daily data from 16 April 2013 to 29 December 2023. We employ two methodologies: quantile connectedness to investigate the impact of climate risks on stock market volatility in different market circumstances and quantile time-frequency connectedness to examine the short-term and long-term spillover effects. Our results indicate that transition and physical risks have asymmetric effects on market indices, which are particularly pronounced during crisis periods....

Does Economic Policy Uncertainty Affect Firms' Digital Transformation?

Ding Xing, Kangning Xu

Politická ekonomie 2026, 74(4) Special issue:782-812 | DOI: 10.18267/j.polek.1543

Economic policies in different regions in China vary greatly. This study examines the impact of Chinese provincial economic policy uncertainty (EPU) on firms' digital transformation using panel data of A-share listed Chinese firms over the 2007-2021 period using a high-dimensional fixed effects model. Notably, we use provincial-level EPU data to explore this impact and explore the moderating effect of leadership characteristics. Results reveal a U-shaped relationship between provincial EPU and firms' digital transformation. We also find that leaders' average age and gender influence the effect of EPU on digital transformation. The findings highlight...
